​​Mellisa Lathion was a breastfeeding mom and WIC participant when she became a Breastfeeding Peer Counselor at her local WIC program in 2011. Mellisa worked at WIC for 3 years. During that time, she received tons of training and education and became a Certified Lactation Specialist in 2012. Mellisa loves breastfeeding and is passionate about providing support and education for moms and babies. The experience led her to become a Registered Nurse in 2016. She went on to become an IBCLC in 2017 and continued her nursing education, graduating with a BSN in 2018. Mellisa worked as a full time RN on the Mother-Baby Unit at her local hospital. She became the Mother-Baby Nurse Educator in 2019 and completed her MSN in Nursing Education in 2021. She also assumed the role of the Lactation Coordinator for her local hospital in 2021. Mellisa has been a member of the Michiana Breastfeeding Coalition since 2011. She is a member of NINLCA, USLCA, AWHONN, and ANPD. Mellisa loves teaching and empowering others. She is an advocate for others, especially those who are marginalized and stigmatized. Mellisa has special interests in supporting chest/breastfeeding, exclusive pumping, and the use of human donor milk for all infants. She oversees the Milk Depot and Donor Milk Express Site at her hospital as well. Mellisa is honored to be a board member of the Indiana Breastfeeding Coalition and looks forward to further collaboration with colleagues across the state and beyond to continue to improve the health outcomes for all women and infants.
